Bronson Burgoon of The Woodlands, Texas, and Austin Schauer of Spring, Texas, have signed national letters-of-intent to play college golf at Texas A&M, Aggies coach J.T. Higgins said Thursday.
Burgoon is the No. 8-ranked junior player in the country and was a third-team All-American pick this year by the American Junior Golf Association. He won the 2003 Texas Class 5A state championship and was the runner-up in 2004, earning all-state recognition both years. Burgoon, whose brother Brandon is a sophomore for the Aggies, finished seventh at the 2004 AJGA Boys Junior Championship won by A&M freshman Bobby Gates.
"Bronson is one of the purest ball strikers I've ever seen," Higgins said. "He has outstanding fundamentals and a wonderful swing. When you couple that with a strong work ethic, great attitude and a desire to be the very best, it's easy to understand why he's regarded as one of the best players in the nation."
Schauer is the No. 59-ranked junior golfer in the country and qualified for the 2004 U.S. Men's Amateur Championship. He is rated among the top 10 junior players in Texas and was selected for the U.S. team that competed in the 2004 Scottish Boys Championship. Schauer has posted a pair of top-five finishes in AJGA tournaments. His father, Monte, played golf at A&M from 1973-75, earning All-America honors as senior.
"Austin is an outstanding player and a terrific young man," Higgins said. "He comes from a family of golfers and Aggies, which probably explains why he's good at everything he does. He's had great exposure to the game from his father and his instructor, Dick Harmon, and has developed into one of the best players in Texas. He hits the ball far and straight which gives him the ability to make a lot of birdies."
