Michael Bennett Jr., a 6-4, 245-pound freshman defensive end from Alief Taylor High School, has signed with Texas A&M University and has been cleared to begin workouts immediately.
"Michael originally signed with Louisiana Tech last year but did not attend classes," Aggie Head Coach Dennis Franchione said. "He has been admitted to school and is currently working out with our team."
Bennett, born Nov. 13, 1985 in Independence, Louisiana, was an All-District and All-Greater Houston selection as a senior for Coach Tom Gerber at Taylor High School in Alief, Texas. He recorded 110 tackles and registered 14 quarterback sacks, forced seven fumbles and had one interception helping the squad reach the playoffs in only the school's second year of existence in 2003. He was selected to play in the Bayou Bowl, a matchup of Louisiana and Texas all-stars. Bennett also played baseball and threw the discus in high school.
He is the son of Michael and Pennie Bennett of Alief and his father played football at Southwestern Louisiana (currently UL-Lafayette). He has one sister, Ashley, and one brother, Martellus.
Arizona, California, Missouri and Wisconsin are some of the schools that were recruiting Bennett.
The Aggies will continue bowl practice sessions until Wednesday when they break for Christmas. The squad will meet in Dallas the morning of Dec. 26th to begin workouts in preparation for the Jan. 1 SBC Cotton Bowl against Tennessee.
