Texas A&M's second annual Night of Champions weight-lifting exhibition was a huge success with a trio of long-standing school records falling, seven unit records being broken and 18 lifters setting personal records on Wednesday at G. Rollie White Coliseum.
Highlighting the night were the efforts of senior Terrence Murphy, junior Aldo De La Garza and junior John Kirk, who set school records in their respective events. Murphy (Tyler, Texas) broke the vertical jump record with a leap of 41.5 inches (old record of 40.5 inches by Sirr Parker, 1998), De La Garza (New Braunfels, Texas) broke the bench press record with a lift of 490 pounds (old record of 485 by Semisi Heimuli in 1999) and Kirk (Fort Worth, Texas) broke the squat standard with a lift of 675 pounds (old record of 670 by Taylor Whitley, 2002).
In addition to those record-setting efforts, the Aggies set or matched four other unit records: senior Keith Joseph set the running back record in the bench press with a lift of 465 pounds (old RB record, 462.5 by Detron Smith, 1995); freshman Japhus Brown set the defensive back record in the squat with a lift of 535 pounds (old DB record, 520 by three players); sophomore Brandon Leone set the defensive back record in the hang clean with a lift of 341 pounds (old DB record, 330 by Keelan Jackson, 2003); and Joseph "Red" Bryant matched the defensive line record in the hang clean with a lift of 385 pounds.
De La Garza also wowed the crowd with 38 repetitions of 225 pounds in the bench press.
Establishing personal record lifts in the bench press were: freshman Derrick Brown (415 lbs.), freshman Corey Clark (415 lbs.), senior Thomas Carriger (470 lbs.), Joseph and De La Garza.
Setting personal record lifts in the squat were: sophomore Justin Warren (555 lbs.), Brown, freshman Cody Wallace (670 lbs.), senior Geoff Hangartner (630 lbs.) and Kirk.
In the hang clean, PRs were set by sophomore Melvin Bullitt (319 lbs.), Leone, senior Byron Jones (335.5 lbs.), Bryant and freshman Kirk Elder (363 lbs.).
In the incline press, PRs were established by freshman Chris Yoder (345 lbs.), junior Fred Woods (350 lbs.) and freshman Chris Alexander (375 lbs.)
Also of interest to the crowd was the basketball dunk competition that was won by senior Jason Carter who flew over teammate John Roberson (sitting in a chair) for an alley-oop slam.
