Mark Conlon of Arlington and Chris Thompson of Rockwall will join the Texas A&M men's golf team next fall, A&M coach J.T. Higgins said Tuesday.
Conlon is transferring from the University of Louisville, where he played in seven tournaments as a freshman and compiled a 75.09 scoring average. He finished third at the Cardinal Intercollegiate last fall with rounds of 74-69-73=216 and earned a spot on the Athletic Director's Honor Roll. The 2002 Fort Worth City Junior champion, Conlon attended Lamar High School and had extensive junior golf experience.
"Mark was a terrific player in high school and wanted to go away to school, but he missed home and our warm winter weather," Higgins said. "He had a nice fall season as a true freshman at Louisville and will not only add depth to our team, but has the talent to compete for a spot on the travel squad on a weekly basis. He has a terrific all-around game, with good length off the tee and a terrific short game. We are very fortunate to have him joining our team."
Thompson was the 2002 Dallas City Junior champion and won the 2003 district and regional titles at Rockwall High School and was named to the All-Area Team by The Dallas Morning News. He won seven high school tournaments and was district runner-up this spring.
"Chris is without a doubt one of the very best high school players in Texas," Higgins said. "He has had great success on the junior level and we believe that will carry over to his college career. He has won just about everything there is to win in the Dallas area, including his district and regional championship. He comes from a great high school program at Rockwall that has produced a lot of college players and he knows how to win, both individually and as part of a team. He will be a big part of the future of Texas A&M golf."
Higgins signed three players in November: Robert Gates, Jr., of Gainesville, Fla.; Martin Piller of Duncanville; and Matt Van Zandt of Houston.
