The Texas A&M football team will face old Southwest Conference rival SMU in a three-game series beginning in 2005 in College Station, A&M Director of Athletics Bill Byrne announced on Wednesday.
The three-game series features a pair of home games for the Aggies and one road trip to SMU's Gerald J. Ford Stadium. The Aggies will host the Mustangs on Sept. 17, 2005 and again in 2011, before facing SMU in Dallas in 2012.
"This is a great match for several reasons: first and foremost, the A&M-SMU series gives us a good home game for our huge base of former students in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex where they don't have to drive as far," Byrne said. "Second, it's great exposure in that area where we recruit so heavily in all sports."
The 2005 contest will be 77th meeting between the two schools in a series that dates back to 1916. A&M, which last faced SMU in 1995, holds a 40-29-7 advantage in the rivalry.
"It's good to renew the series with an old Southwest Conference friend," A&M head coach Dennis Franchione said. "We have a large number of fans in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and this series should be appealing to them. I think it will also help us in recruiting in that area."
