Texas A&M head coach Jo Evans recorded her 600th and 601st wins as the No. 23 Aggies swept UT-San Antonio, 6-5 and 1-0, on a cold and windy day at the Aggie Softball Complex.
"It feels good to get the 600th win behind me and focus on winning games the rest of the season." Evans stated. "We are young and talented and we expect to win a lot of games this year. UTSA is so dangerous at the plate but our players came out and took care of business and got two hard-fought wins."
In game one, pitcher Megan Gibson (Spring, Texas) became the Aggies' first run of the game in the second inning when she scored on a Rocky Spencer (Katy, Texas) single after hitting a double to right field.
The Aggies put two more runs across in the third inning when Joy Davis (Austin,Texas) and Sharonda McDonald (Houston, Texas) were plated by a Jamie Hinshaw (Missouri City, Texas) single through the right side.
With two-outs in the fourth inning, second baseman Joy Davis (Austin, Texas) battled in a 10-pitch at-bat before hitting an infield single that kept the inning alive sparking a two-run rally.
With catcher Morgan Hebert (Peoria, Ariz.) pinch running for Lindsay Park (Arcadia, Calif.) on third and Davis on second after a stolen base, McDonald legged out a bunt that scored Hebert and Davis after a throwing error by the UTSA shortstop.
Park pushed the Aggies' sixth, and eventual game-winning, run across in the fifth with a single to left that scored Amanda Scarborough (Magnolia, Texas) from second. Scarborough reached second on her second double of the season.
Gibson earned her first win in her first career start while sophomore Jill Weynand (Frisco, Texas) recorded her first save.
In the nightcap, James drove in the games first run in the third inning with a line drive single to left that plated McDonald from second. McDonald reached on a walk before stealing second.
One run is all the Amanda Scarborough would need as she recorded her second shutout in as many attempts. Scarborough improves to 2-0 on the season with a 0.00 ERA in two starts.
Jill Weynand was named the State Farm Player of the Day for her spectacular relief performance in game one. Weynand entered the game with a one-run lead, two-outs and the bases loaded in the sixth and retired the next four batters to secure the teams second and Evans' 600th win.
The Aggies hit the road for the weekend as they head to Arizona for the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State. The Aggies will play five games in the tournament, including, Wisconsin, No. 1 California, New Mexico, Cal St. Northridge and Chattanooga.
