Texas A&M freshman hurler Amanda Scarborough retained a perfect record Friday as she led No. 16 A&M (14-1) to a 10-0 victory over No. 12 Washington (7-5) in five innings at the Palm Springs Classic.
Scarborough (7-0) was named the State Farm Player of the Game after throwing a complete game four-hit shutout while recording five strikeouts.
"This is a really dominant win over a really good team," stated A&M head coach Jo Evans. "We came out confident that we would win and that is what we did. Amanda (Scarborough) was dominant on the mound and we were able to force them in to a lot of errors by putting pressure on them at the plate and on the basepaths."
In the first inning, Jamie Hinshaw (Missouri City, Texas) scored the game's first run when she crossed the plate from third when Washington attempted to throw out Jana James (Mesquite, Texas) at second on a stolen base.
With two outs in the second, the Aggies sent 10 batters to the plate and came away with six runs on four hits, four walks, two passed balls and two Husky errors.
Sharonda McDonald made it 8-0 in the third when she scored on one of four Husky wild pitches after reaching on a walk and moving two bases on a previous wild pitch.
Later in the inning, Scarborough (Magnolia, Texas) made it an even 10-run lead with a single to right that was misplayed by the fielder allowing James and Megan Gibson (Spring, Texas) to score from second and first, respectively.
After batting around for the second inning in a row, the Aggies finished the third with a 10-0 lead on a hit, three walks, two wild pitches and one error.
Scarborough recorded her sixth shutout of the season allowing the Aggie offense to take over the scoring and lead A&M to its eighth run-rule victory of the season. Earlier in the day, the Aggies defeated Loyola Marymount, 8-0, in five innings.
A&M's 14-1 start is the schools best since 1991 when the team began the season 15-1.
The Aggies continue play in the Palm Springs Classic when they take on No. 1 California and UNLV on Saturday. Log on to AggieAthletics.com for tournament information and updates.
