Texas A&M pitcher Amanda Scarborough carried a no-hitter into the seventh before finishing with a one-hit shutout of McNeese St. in the Aggies 5-0 win in the final game of the St. Joseph Texas A&M Invitational on Sunday at the Aggie Softball Complex.
Texas A&M wrapped up the tournament title on Saturday in their 11-2 run-rule win over Miami University.
Joy Davis (Austin, Texas) was named the State Farm Player of the Day after going 2-for-2 with two RBI in leading the Aggies to their school record 21-2 start.
"We had a really good weekend," A&M head coach Jo Evans commented. "Friday, our pitching was right on key, Saturday our hitters showed up and our defensive was rock solid throughout."
The Aggies finished the five-game weekend with a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage while outscoring their opponents 31-3 while recording a 0.68 team ERA. The Aggies got all the pitching they needed with a perfect game by Jill Weynand (Frisco, Texas) and one-hitter by Scarborough while the A&M hitters delivered when needed by recording 14 two-out RBI.
In the tourney's final game, After Amanda Scarborough (Magnolia, Texas) retired McNeese in order in the first, Sharonda McDonald (Houston, Texas) got the Aggies started offensively when she singled to center and stole her way to third before scoring on a passed ball.
Before the end of the inning, Jana James(Mesquite, Texas) made it 2-0 Aggies when she reached on a walk, stole second and scored from second on aggressive base running on a 20-foot groundout by Megan Gibson (Spring, Texas).
With two outs in the second, Joy Davis (Austin, Texas) drove in her first RBI of the tournament with a single up the middle scoring Rocky Spencer (Katy, Texas) after she reached on an infield single and advanced to third on a stolen base and a groundout.
The Aggies added two runs in the fourth off of a hit and three Cowgirl errors. Adrian Gregory (Livingston, Texas) became A&M's fourth when McNeese second baseman Nicki Edlund made a fielding error on a Lindsay Park (Arcadia, Calif.) grounder. With Spencer advancing to third on the play, she quickly made it 5-0 A&M when she scored on Davis' second single of the game.
Scarborough entered the seventh having retired 13 consecutive batters before giving up the Cowgirls' only hit of the game, a single up the middle.
