Texas A&M freshmen softball players Megan Gibson and Amanda Scarborough were two of 25 players named to the USA Softball National Player of the Year watch list, the association announced Wednesday.
"This is an exciting honor for Megan and Amanda," stated A&M head coach Jo Evans. "They have done a fantastic job coming in and adjusting to the college game. They are extremely hard workers and consummate team players."
Gibson, a pitcher/infielder from Spring, Texas, leads the No. 6 Aggies with a .416 average, 13 home runs, 40 RBI and a .881 slugging percentage. Her 13 homers also leave her atop the Big 12. In the circle, Gibson is 6-1 with a 2.56 ERA including a 5-2 complete-game victory over No. 1 California where she hit a home run and drove in four.
Scarborough, a pitcher/first baseman from Magnolia, Texas, is 20-1 in the circle with a 0.47 ERA and is second on the team with a .406 avg., and 37 RBI. She is third on the team with eight home runs and tied for first with 10 doubles. Scarborough has been named Big 12 Pitcher of the Week two times and has been named Louisville Slugger/NFCA National Player of the Week one time and USA Softball National Player of the Week one time.
On May 10 a list of 10 finalists will be named for the award. On May 31, the list will be cut to three and those final three players will travel to Oklahoma City for the announcement of the winner at 2005 Women's College World Series.
