Texas A&M pitcher Amanda Scarborough earned her 21st win of the season as the No. 6 Texas A&M softball team (35-3, 6-1) defeated Iowa State (12-21, 0-7), 3-0, in front of an above capacity school-record crowd of 1,855 at the Aggie Softball Complex.
Scarborough (Magnolia, Texas) was named the State Farm Player of the Game as she threw her fifth one-hitter of the season and retired 12 batters in a row to put the Aggies back on top of the Big 12 standings.
"First of all, it is nice to come out and get back on the winning track," commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. "After Wednesday's loss we wanted to get things going again and we took a step in the right direction today. They (Iowa State) made it tough on us today by playing good defense but our aggressiveness paid off early. We are successful because we are an aggressive team and we were able to score early because of that approach."
Sharonda McDonald (Houston, Texas) got the Aggies started in the first inning when she scored on a Jamie Hinshaw (Missouri City, Texas) grounder after singling, stealing second and advancing to third on a Cyclone error. Hinshaw then made it 2-0 when she was plated by a Megan Gibson (Spring, Texas) single up the middle.
Jana James (Mesquite, Texas) put the Aggies up 3-0 in the sixth when she reached on a three-base fielding error before scoring on a passed ball.
With the win, Texas A&M improved to 23-4 all time against Iowa State.
The Aggies continue conference play on Sunday at noon when they close out the two-game series with Iowa State.
