The Big 12 Regular season champion Texas A&M softball team (44-8) was picked as the No. 5 national seed in the upcoming NCAA Softball Championships. As the No. 5 seed, the Aggies will be the No. 1 seed in the College Station regional and will host No. 2 Penn State, No. 3 Centenary and No. 4 McNeese St. at the Aggie Softball Complex in Friday-Sunday action.
"It is really exciting to be able to host a regional at home in front of the best fans in the nation," commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. "Our team has worked extremely hard all season to get to this point and we couldn't be more excited to begin play."
The No. 4 Aggies will open tournament play at 4 p.m. on Friday when they take on McNeese St. The Cowgirls earned the Southland Conference's automatic qualifier by winning the Southland Conference Tournament.
Friday's second game will begin at 6:30 and will pit Penn State against Centenary.
The weekend's regional will be the first-ever regional hosted at the Aggie Softball Complex which was built in 1994. The Aggies last hosted a regional in 1991. That regional was won by Utah which was coached at the time by A&M's Evans.
The Big 12 placed eight teams in the tournament for the first time in history breaking the record of seven teams set in 1999. Texas, Baylor, Missouri, Oklahoma, Kansas, Oklahoma St., Nebraska and A&M all received bids with Texas, Oklahoma, Baylor and A&M receiving top-16 rankings.
