Texas A&M sophomore Trey Todd birdied two of the last three holes on Sunday to win the 77th West Texas Amateur Championship at Hillcrest Country Club.

Todd joins an illustrious list of past winners that includes former Masters champion Charles Coody and PGA TOUR player Bob Estes.

"It's a great feeling to win this tournament, especially looking at some of the names on that trophy," Todd said.

Todd posted rounds of 70-68-70 for an eight-under-par total of 208 for a two-shot victory over The Woodlands' Jeff New, who closed fast with a 65.

With three holes remaining, Todd learned New had completed the tournament at six-under, spurring his strong finish.

At the par-5 16th, Todd blasted a long drive then hit a 7-iron to 15 feet to set up a two-putt birdie. After a par the par-3 17th, Todd pulled his drive on the 18th into the left rough. He recovered with a 9-iron to the middle of the green and dropped the 25-foot birdie putt for the victory.

"Being so close made it pretty exciting down the stretch," Todd said.
