Texas A&M Head Football Coach Dennis Franchione welcomed the Aggie football players back to campus on Sunday.
"This is always an exciting day," Coach Fran said. "There is a little difference this year since most of the newcomers have been on campus getting acclimated to school and working in the weight room. We are anxious to get started and to see the newcomers on the practice field."
"Most of the veteran players have worked with a purpose since last January in anticipation for the upcoming season," Fran stated. "We are looking to take another step toward getting better. I believe we have good leadership and I expect this group to continue to work hard to improve."
Coach Fran also announced that senior wide receiver Jesse Woods (Katy, Texas) has been placed on a medical scholarship. Woods suffered a knee injury last fall which kept him out of the majority of the season as well as missing spring drills. Senior defensive back Bryant Singleton (Galveston, Texas) was not certified eligible to compete this fall. Incoming freshman defensive back Gremon Coffman (Duncanville, Texas) is waiting on final NCAA certification and is counted among the 105 reporting limit.
The Aggies, ranked No. 17 in the pre-season USA Today Coaches poll, open the 2005 campaign on the road against Clemson on Sept. 3. The game will be televised in prime time on ABC Sports with kickoff shortly after 7 p.m. central time.
The football team will work once a day on the practice field through Friday. Practices are not open to the public.
