The day's opening match took three additional holes but top-seeded Andrew Parr of Texas A&M avoided opening-round disappointment Tuesday at Bell Bay Golf Club by knocking off 64th seeded James Latta of St. Clemente, Ont. at the 101st playing of the Canadian Men's Amateur Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA).
Riding a timely putter, Parr drained a 15-footer on the 18th hole to extend the match to extra holes. On the third extra hole, Latta pulled his 190-yard approach shot into the rough and had his chip on stop well short of the hole. Latta would miss his 20-foot putt as Parr rolled a 40-footer to within a foot of the hole for the tap in victory. The 22-year old London, Ontario native advances to Wednesday's round of 32 where he will face 32nd seed Mark Sommerfeld of Waterloo, Ont., who needed two extra holes to outlast David Arnold of Brooklin, Ont.
The second round of match play gets under way Tuesday morning at 7:30 a.m. with 32 competitors set to challenge for Canada's most prestigious amateur golfing title.
