The Walter Camp Football Foundation has announced its Division 1-A National Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week for games ending September 17.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
REGGIE McNEAL, TEXAS A & M
Senior, Quarterback, Lufkin, TX/Lufkin
Reggie McNeal set a school record with 449 yards of total offense to lead Texas A&M to a 66-8 rout of SMU. McNeal passed for 349 yards (15-of-24) with five touchdowns (15, 80, 68, 32 and 47 yards) and added 100 rushing yards and one touchdown as the Aggies (1-1) racked up 714 yards of total offense in the contest. It is the second time that McNeal has been named Walter Camp's National Offensive Player of the Week, having also captured the honor on October 17, 2004.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
A.J. NICHOLSON, FLORIDA STATE
Senior, Linebacker, Winston-Salem, NC/Mt. Tabor
Linebacker A.J. Nicholson recorded two interceptions, returning one 19 yards for a touchdown on the game's first play from scrimmage, and added a game-high 19 tackles as #8 Florida State defeated #17 Boston College, 28-17. Nicholson's two interceptions came in the first quarter as the Seminoles (3-0, 2-0 in the ACC) jumped out to a 14-0 lead. It was the first meeting since 1980 between the now-ACC rivals.
Walter Camp, "The Father of American football," first selected an All-America team in 1889. Camp - a former Yale University athlete and football coach - is also credited with developing play from scrimmage, set plays, the numerical assessment of goals and tries and the restriction of play to eleven men per side.
The Walter Camp Football Foundation - a New Haven-based all-volunteer group - was founded in 1967 to perpetuate the ideals of Camp and to continue the tradition of selecting annually an All-America team. For more information on the Walter Camp Football Foundation, go to www.waltercamp.org.
