Texas A&M freshman Bronson Burgoon fired rounds of 74-72=146 on Monday to share the individual lead and lift the Aggies into the team lead after two rounds of the Adams Cup of Newport Cleveland Golf Classic at the Orchard Course at Newport National Golf Club.

The 16-team field battled through strong, gusty winds all day as the remnants of Hurricane Rita passed through the northeast.The final round is scheduled for Tuesday.

A&M carded a 306 in the morning round to trail South Carolina-Aiken by five shots, but posted the day's only sub-300 round in the afternoon with a 297 for a 603 total. Aiken is in second at 609, followed by North Carolina (610), Southeastern Louisiana (611), Rhode Island (612), South Florida (618), Virginia Commonwealth (618), North Texas (620), Georgetown (627), Texas-San Antonio (629), Marshall (636), Yale (639), Furman (640), Iowa State (641), East Carolina (648) and Bryant (650).

"I'm really pleased with the way we played and battled through the elements," A&M coach J.T. Higgins said. "We have a chance to win a tournament, which would be a big step for us. Going into the final round with the lead is a new experience for us. I'm anxious to see how we handle it."

Burgoon shares the individual lead with Aiken's Scott Brown (72-74=146). North Carolina's Martin Ureta is third at 71-76=147.

"Bronson played really well today," Higgins said. "He did a tremendous job and played with enthusiasm and confidence. He just played really solid golf both rounds."

A&M senior Andrew Parr is tied for fourth at 78-73=151, while sophomore Robert Gates is tied for 12th (78-75=153), senior Jerad Harklau is tied for 18th (76-78=154) and sophomore Trey Todd is tied for 26th (78-77=155).
