Senior Jerad Harklau fired a three-under-par 69 on Tuesday to lead Texas A&M to the team title at the Adams Cup of Newport Cleveland Golf Classic at the Orchard Course at Newport National Golf Club.
The Aggies posted a total of 306-297-292=895 to finish five strokes ahead of runner-up North Carolina (900) as winds gusted at more than 20 miles per hour. A&M's last tournament title came at the 2003 Border Olympics.
"It's great to get a win under our belts," A&M coach J.T. Higgins said. "The guys really played well under adverse conditions. The players showed great poise and did a phenomenal job from top to bottom."
A&M freshman Bronson Burgoon finished second in the individual standings with a two-over 74-72-72=218, two strokes behind champion Martin Ureta of North Carolina (71-76-69=216). Harklau placed fourth at 71-76-69=223.
A&M's Andrew Parr (78-73-77=228) and Robert Gates (78-75-75=228) tied for 10th, while Trey Todd tied for 18th (78-77-76=231).
South Carolina-Aiken was third in the team race at 907, followed by Rhode Island (918), South Florida (927), UT-San Antonio (929), North Texas (931), Virginia Commonwealth (935), Southeastern Louisiana (938), Furman (938), Iowa State (943), Marshall (944), Georgetown (946), Yale (952), East Carolina (956) and Bryant (971).
