Coming off a hard 2-1 loss against the University of Texas last Sunday, the 18th- ranked Texas A&M soccer team is looking to get back on track with a win when it hosts the Iowa State Cyclones on Friday at 7:00 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
"Iowa State is a very tough team to play," commented A&M head coach G. Guerrieri. "We have had major battles with them the last couple of times we've played. And because they are coming off such a good weekend where they beat Kansas 3-1, I'm sure they'll be playing with extra confidence and vigor this Friday night."
Entering into Friday night's match, the Aggies are 8-2-1, 2-1 in Big 12 play. Sophomore forward Melissa Garey continues to lead the conference in goals scored recording 11 in just as many games. Garey is second in the Big 12 in points per game with 24 and teammate Ashlee Pistorius holds the third spot with 18.
The Cyclones wrapped up a two-game series at home this weekend in which they tied Missouri 1-1 in double overtime and beat Kansas 3-1. Senior Amy Flores leads the Cyclones in goals scored with six. Overall Iowa State is 7-3-3, 2-1-1 in conference play.
Last year when A&M traveled to Ames, Iowa to face the Cyclones, Madison Klovstad scored a goal in the 23rd minute that helped lift the then No. 9 Aggies past Iowa State 1-0. The win helped A&M clinch a piece of the 2004 Big 12 regular season title.
The Aggies hold the all-time series record 10-0-1 against the Cyclones, the double overtime tie coming on a neutral playing field in San Antonio during the '99 season. Iowa State is coached by Rebecca Hornbacher who is in her third year with the program.
