Aggressiveness at the plate on Thursday against the Lady Bucs from Blinn College led the Aggie softball team to two shutout victories (9-0, 8-0), improving its fall record to 6-0.
"We played with energy and focus tonight and we were able to work on all aspects of our game," commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. "We came out and were aggressive at the plate and put runs across early. Both Megan (Gibson) and Jill (Weynand) did a great job in the circle keeping their hitters guessing and off balance."
In the bottom of the first in game one, Gibson's aggressiveness at the plate paid off as she launched a deep shot well over the left field fence for a grand slam, scoring Jamie Hinshaw, Jami Lopries and Ronda Smith. The trio reached on back-to-back-to-back singles. Smith and fellow-freshman Holly Ridley followed Gibson's lead, hitting homers of their own in the third inning en route to another Aggie run-rule victory, 9-0.
Gibson also recorded the win as she pitched a complete game, allowing just one hit while striking out four Blinn batters.
Smith, who went 3-3 in game one, continued to produce for the Aggies in game two in yet another perfect performance that included a two-run homer in the first and doubles in the third and fifth innings. At the day's end, Smith was 6-for-6 with five runs and five RBI.
Weynand slated the 8-0 victory in the second game of the doubleheader, striking out six in her complete-game performance.
Next Tuesday the Aggies face the Whitecaps from Galveston College in a two-game set scheduled for 5:00 and 7:00 p.m. at the Bryan High softball field.
Please note fall games are being played at the Bryan High facilities while construction is being completed on the new playing surface at the Aggie Softball Complex. Also, fans attending games at the Bryan High softball field should park in the swimming pool parking lot or the outer edges of the main parking lot, outside the yellow lines.
