The 14th-ranked Texas A&M soccer team returns to the Aggie Soccer Stadium, Friday, to face the No. 24 Colorado Buffaloes at 7:00 p.m. in a game that could prove to be a deciding factor in who's crowned the Big 12 Regular Season Champion.
"The Buffaloes are playing some really good soccer these days," commented A&M head coach G. Guerrieri. "They come to Aggieland as the leaders in the Big 12 Standings, and will surely be a challenging opponent for us. We have the ability to win the Big 12 Championship, but we've got to beat CU to achieve that goal. So, I think you can expect to see one of the great games of the 2005 season this Friday night at the Aggie Soccer Stadium."
The Aggies (10-3-2, 4-2-1 in Big 12) moved up in the conference standings this past weekend with a win over Oklahoma and a tie with Oklahoma State. A&M, Oklahoma and Kansas all have 13 points in conference play while Colorado and Texas have 15.
Ashlee Pistorius' two goals and three assists against OU last Friday helped earn her the title of Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and moved the sophomore forward to the overall point's leader in the conference with 28. Pistorius is third in the Big 12 in both goals scored (10) and assists (8). Teammate, Melissa Garey, still leads the conference in total goals (12) and is third in points (26).
Senior, goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak totes the best goals against average (0.78) in the Big 12, only allowing 12 goals to be scored in 1377:28 minutes of play. She's also recorded, a conference second-best, six shutouts.
Colorado sits in first place in the conference with an overall record of 9-5-2, 5-2 in Big 12. Senior midfielder, Fran Munnelly leads CU in scoring with eight goals this season. The Buffaloes are coached by Bill Hempen, who is 43-29-7 in four seasons with the program.
In 2004, the Aggies, who lead the all-time series 11-0-1, beat Colorado in Boulder, 2-1. Pistorius nailed the game-winning goal in the 84th minute off a pass from Madison Klovstad.
Sunday, A&M will face Texas Tech (1-14-0, 0-6 in Big 12) in a game scheduled to start at 1:30 p.m. at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. The Aggies own the all-time series 10-1 and shutout the Red Raiders last season in Lubbock 3-0.
