A goal with 12 seconds left in regulation lifted the Iowa State Cyclones past the 18th-ranked Texas A&M soccer team Friday night at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. With the loss, the Aggies fell to 8-3-1, 2-2 in Big 12 play, while the Cyclones improve to 8-3-3 on the season, 2-2-1 in the conference.
In the 89th minute, Iowa State's Stephanie Kaphingst headed a shot from the close left wing past Aggie goalkeeper Kati Jo Spisak for the game-winner. Elisa Berzins was awarded the assist on the play.
Throughout the first 45 minutes A&M did an outstanding job of winning and maintaining possession of the ball but went into halftime tied with Iowa Sate at zero. The second half appeared to be a mirror image of the first half of play, one in which the Aggies dominated the shots taken, 17-2.
In the second half, A&M took six corners to Iowa State's one and managed to fire-off eight shots, again to ISU's one, but the one Cyclone shot proved to be the deciding factor in their win. ISU's goalkeeper, Joanna Haig recorded 12 saves against an onslaught of A&M attacks, unfortunately the Aggies were not able to finish any of their scoring opportunities.
A&M's defense was solid throughout the 90 minutes of play, only allowing Iowa State to get close enough to send three shots at the goal, two of which were saves for Spisak.
The Aggies return to action at home on Sunday as they face the Nebraska Cornhuskers at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. Game-time is set for 1:30 p.m. All youths attending the match in their team soccer jerseys will be admitted into the game for free.
