Stacy Sykora, a standout on the Texas A&M volleyball team from 1995-98, has been named to the seven-member Big 12 Volleyball 10th Anniversary Team, the league office announced Tuesday.
The 5-10 outside hitter from Burleson, Texas, earned second-team All-America honors from the American Volleyball Coaches Association in 1997 and 1998 and also was a member of the All-Big 12 first-team in each of her final two years at A&M. Sykora went on to become a member of the USA Women?â„¢s Olympic Team and was the starting libero at both the 2000 and 2004 Olympiads.
Always a crowd favorite because of her high flying, explosive attacks, her cat-like quickness and her phenomenal digs, the dynamic and charismatic Sykora led the Big 12 and was ninth in the nation in digs per game (4.37) in her final season at A&M. She led the conference in digs per game with a 4.54 average in conference games only, breaking the league record of 4.44, which she set in 1996. Sykora completed her stellar college career holding 23 A&M single match, Big 12 season and Big 12 career records and ranking second in the A&M career records in both kills (1,586) and digs (1,471).
The Big 12 Volleyball 10th anniversary team was selected by a combined media panel and an on-line fan poll. In order to be eligible for consideration, candidates had to have been an All-Big 12 first team selection. Nearly 1,000 fans took part in the fan voting, which took place on the league web site at www.big12sports.com.
Anniversary teams will be chosen for each conference sport during the 2005-06 season in celebration of the Big 12?â„¢s 10th anniversary.
