Lenka Zimova scored a career-high 12 points for Texas A&M as it beat Sam Houston, 94-52, in women?™s basketball Saturday night at Reed Arena.
Every available player for the Aggies saw action in the first 16 minutes of the game and all scored points in the contest.
?We had 14 players that stepped up and played within themselves pretty good,? A&M coach Gary Blair said. ?That was the most impressive part.?
A&M started the game with a 10-2 run before embarking on a 24-0 streak to lead 34-4 with 7:10 to play in the first half.
?Sam Houston State, I think, was a little shell shocked early,? Blair said. ?We played pretty well early, a little bit in transition. What I was pleased at was we made the extra pass against the zone and got people involved in the offense.?
The Bearkats hit a field goal in the opening two minutes, but then did not score a field goal for a stretch of 14 minutes in the first half. They missed 15 straight attempts before Ratysha Alexander connected at the 3:40 mark.
A&M led 48-20 at halftime. It was the most points scored by the Aggies in a first half this season.
After shooting 16 percent in the first half, the Bearkats connected on above 60 percent for much of the second half. But, Sam Houston could not come closer than, 58-36
A&M?™s largest lead was 46 points, the final score.
Jamila Ganter added 11 points for the Aggies as she ran the point guard position for 19 minutes. She dished out five assists and recorded no turnovers while draining a pair of three pointers.
?(Ganter) came in and hit some tough shots,? Blair said. ?I thought she just did a tremendous job.?
LaToya Gulley scored 7 points off the bench over 14 minutes and dished out three assists and grabbed three rebounds.
?(Gulley) has waited her turn patiently with her head up and been very positive,? Blair said. ?She came in and did some good things. A lot of that has come from how well she has practiced the last two and a half weeks.?
Morenike Atunrase and Tamea Scales each scored 10 points for A&M.
Sam Houston was led by Erica Parker?™s 14 points.
The Aggies will play four games over a six day stretch beginning at the Duel in the Desert in Las Vegas when the they take on Detroit on Saturday at 9:30 p.m. at Cox Pavilion. A&M returns home for a pair of games the following week.
NOTES?-Jamila Ganter was named the State Farm Player of the Game. It was the 11th straight win for the Aggies dating to 1980. Blair improves to 19-0 all-time against Sam Houston. A&M shot a season best 57 percent from the field while recording a season-high 29 assists. The Aggies scored 39 points off of 24 turnovers by Sam Houston.
