Bob DeBesse (da-BESS) has been named an offensive assistant coach on the Texas A&M football staff and work with the wide receivers, Aggie Head Coach Dennis Franchione announced today.
?We?™re excited about Bob joining our staff,? Coach Fran said. ?His offensive knowledge is outstanding and he did a great job at Minnesota and Purdue. He has recruited the state of Texas and has a good relationship with the Texas high school coaches. He is an excellent recruiter and I think he is a great addition to our staff. He will work with the wide receivers and Kenny Pope will coach running backs.?
Pope will continue to serve as assistant head coach and work with the running backs. Pope has coached the Aggie wide receivers the past three years and has worked with Coach Fran since 1998.
DeBesse served as wide receivers coach and recruiting coordinator at Purdue the past three years. The Boilermakers set numerous offensive marks in the Big 10 Conference as well as the NCAA record book.
?I am thrilled to be joining this staff at Texas A&M," DeBesse said. ?First and foremost, to be a part of a tradition-rich football program and university is tremendous. I have admired the job Coach Fran has done over the years and I am familiar with members of his staff and respect the job they have done. I?™m excited about the opportunity to return to the state of Texas. I have enjoyed a good relationship with the Texas high school coaches and look forward to continuing to work with them.?
DeBesse has been successful recruiting the state of Texas and he has many connections to the Lone State State. DeBesse served as the head coach of the Southwest Texas State Bobcats from 1997-2002. His stint was highlighted by the 2000 season as the Bobcats finished 7-4 with a school-best 5-2 mark in Southland Conference action. Southwest Texas State ranked No. 24 in the final NCAA 2000 Division I-AA poll.
Previous to his head coaching experience, DeBesse served as the offensive coordinator at the University of Minnesota from 1992-1996. During his time in Minnesota, the Golden Gophers set numerous records with his multi-dimensional offense.
From 1983-91, DeBesse served as an assistant coach at TCU. He was the offensive coordinator in 1990 and 1991.
After being born Sept. 30, 1959 in Boston, DeBesse grew up in Houston and was a product of Stratford High School. He was a three-year football letterman at Southwest Texas State (1978-80) and was the special teams captain his senior season. In addition to his on the field talents, DeBesse was named to the Dean?™s List. He played his final two years under the tutelage of Jim Wacker. Wacker kept him on the staff as a student assistant and the Bobcats enjoyed back-to-back Division II national championship crowns in 1981 and 1982.
DeBesse earned his bachelor?™s degree in education from Southwest Texas State in 1982. He and his wife, Janet, a former SWT gymnast and cheerleader, have three children: Brittney, Kaila and Cameron.
DeBesse takes the place of running backs coach Lee Fobbs who left the staff to take the head coaching job at North Carolina A&T.
