Texas A&M's Andrew Parr (London, Ont.) fired a scorching five-under 67 Sunday at Bell Bay Golf Club to take the opening-round clubhouse lead at the 101st Canadian Men's Amateur Championship, conducted by the Royal Canadian Golf Association (RCGA).
Parr caught fire mid-round reeling off seven birdies from holes six through 13 to take a one-stroke lead over Greg Brine of Moncton, N.B. and Brad Iles of Wellington, N.Z. Afterward, the 22-year old said that though ultimately a true test of golf, the challenging Cape Breton layout has played to his strengths in the championship's early going.
"The golf course is really playing like a national championship course," said Parr, a member of the RCGA Player Development Program's National Amateur Team. "I started getting into a groove on six and my swing just felt right. The key for me right now is to keep it simple, hopefully continue to play well, find my lines out there and play it safe into match play."
Breen was the early story of the day at Bell Bay after having played his way into the championship through Friday's Canadian Amateur qualifier. The 22-year old fired five birdies on the day to hold a share of second with Iles as the kiwi made a charge on his back nine finishing with six birdies.
"This golf course really sets up well for me with my length off the tee," said Brine, who fired a 74 in the qualifier to earn his spot in the field. "This is an awesome golf course and a real test and its key with this layout to keep it between the trees. Hopefully my putter keeps working for me tomorrow and I can stick to my game plan to play for par."
Corey Steger of North Vancouver, B.C. and Josh Geary of Wellington, N.Z. hold down a share of fourth at three-under 69 while Greg Jones of Moncton, N.B., Andrew Ross of Dundas, Ont. and Rick Blair of Victoria, B.C. are tied for sixth at 70. Defending champion Darren Wallace of Langley, B.C. sits tied for 37th at 74.
With darkness setting in, RCGA tournament officials postponed the completion of the opening round with three golfers yet to complete their rounds. The opening round will be completed at 7:00 am on Monday with second-round action set to begin at approximately 7:30 am.
In the hunt for the Willingdon Cup, the Alberta team of James Love of Calgary (71), Ryan Swelin of Sundre (74), Ryan Lecuyer of Edmonton (75) and Ryan Vallely of Medicine Hat (77) fired a team-total 220 to take a one-stroke lead into Monday's final round of team play. New Brunswick sits second at 221 while Ontario is third at 222 and defending champion British Columbia is fourth at 227. The Willingdon Cup Inter-provincial team championship will wrap up Monday with the teams teeing off in the morning draw.
Andrew Fox of Okotoks, Alta. will live vicariously through his son Mitchell this week in Baddeck. The elder Fox, who accompanied his son to last week's Canadian Junior Championship in Woodstock, Ont., was originally registered to compete in Friday's Canadian Men's Amateur qualifier. When weather delayed the final round of the Junior on Thursday, Fox decided to withdraw from qualifier and remain in Woodstock to watch his son win the Canadian Junior title. With his dad as his caddy, Fox shot an opening-round 73 and sits tied for 21st.
