The No. 14 Texas A&M soccer team earned a 1-0 victory in a defensive battle against No. 16 Stanford Sunday afternoon at the Regal Soccer Complex in the final round of the First Tennessee Lady Vol Classic.
"Obviously I'm excited to get two great shutout wins in a tournament sporting such high caliber teams," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri. "These wins are huge for the girl's confidence entering into Big 12 play on the road next weekend against two teams we lost to last year."
A&M and Stanford traded possession throughout the first half. The Aggies' best opportunity to score came in the 25th minute when Kat Krambeer was fouled in the penalty box. Unfortunately for A&M, Madison Klovstad's penalty kick bounced off the lower end of the left post before being cleared by a Cardinal defender.
A&M and Stanford went into halftime deadlocked 0-0. The Aggies took four shots in the first half while the Cardinal only fired one.
The second half started much the same way the first half ended, with possession being traded between the two teams. It was not until 20:33 remaining in regulation that Allison Martino sent a hard shot off a header from the far post past Cardinal goalkeeper, Alex Gamble for the game winner.
With less than a minute remaining in regulation, Stanford was awarded a corner kick but a sound Aggie defense put away any hope of the Cardinal coming back for a tie with the kick being headed away from the goal by an A&M defender.
The shots were evenly distributed between A&M and Stanford at the end of the match, the Aggies taking 11 to the Cardinal's 10. Stanford took five corner kicks while A&M was only awarded one.
With the game winner, Martino was named State Farm Player of the Game.
The Aggies take to the road again next weekend to start Big 12 play against Missouri on Friday at Audrey J. Walton Track/Soccer Stadium in Columbia. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. A&M leads the series against the Tigers 7-2. Live stats will be available here on AggieAthletics.com.
