"We are looking forward to hosting our first tournament this weekend," commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. "Our team is continuing to improve and we are gaining confidence with each game with play. Our younger players are starting to get more comfortable and it's nice to see our upper classmen stepping up and leading our team. It should be a great weekend for us."
Friday night will serve as the fourth meeting between Southeastern Louisiana and A&M. The Aggies own the all-time series against the Lions 3-0. Against Fordham, A&M leads the series 2-0 with both meetings occurring in the 2001 season.
Sophomore third baseman, Jamie Hinshaw, is the leading hitter for A&M. Hinshaw (.348) is 8 for 23 with two doubles, a homerun and six RBI. Not far behind Hinshaw is freshman Holly Ridley (.333) who had a break-out performance at the plate against UTSA going 4 for 5 with a double, a homerun and two runs batted-in.
Southeastern Louisiana enters the tournament with a 3-2 record after opening the 2006 season with a second-place finish at the Lion Classic at North Oak Park. Junior outfielder Katie Szmergalski leads the team with a .385 batting average. Freshman Heather Sherrill (.375), junior Amber Gentry (.364) and junior Carolann Wenisch (.333) - all Lady Lion newcomers - are the other top performers at the plate for Southeastern. Wenisch leads the team with seven runs batted in.
The defending Atlantic 10 Conference champions, Fordham Rams will be the third team competing in the tournament. Fordham opens the 2006 season tonight in a doubleheader against the University of Texas. Senior Katie Davis was named the Atlantic 10 Player of the Year, while Sara Kinney was Pitcher of the Year and Laura Klaiber was tabbed Rookie of the Year.
