Texas A&M freshman Bronson Burgoon fired a 6-under-par 66 on Wednesday and is tied for second place after the opening round of the John Burns Intercollegiate at Leilehua Golf Club. The tournament continues through Friday.
Long Beach State's Brett Lederer leads with a 65. Burgoon is tied with Auburn's Jay Moseley, who also had a 66.
The No. 18-ranked Aggies are in ninth place after posting an 8-under team total of 280. Auburn leads after firing a 273, followed by No. 24 Arizona (275), Long Beach State (277), Colorado State (277), No. 5 BYU (278), SMU (279), No. 25 New Mexico (279), No. 23 San Diego State (279), A&M (280), San Jose State (281), No. 7 UNLV (282), UTEP (284), Denver (285), Nevada (286), California (289), Hawaii (290), San Diego (291), Utah (292) and UC Santa Barbara (293).
A&M sophomore Robert Gates is tied for 27th in the individual standings after a 2-under 70, while senior Andrew Parr is tied for 39th (71) and senior Jerad Harklau (73) and sophomore Trey Todd (73) are tied for 69th.
"I'm never going to complain about shooting 8-under, but we had it deeper and just played poorly down the stretch," A&M coach J.T. Higgins said. "We played the last few holes in 5-over while Arizona played them in 5-under and they finished five shots ahead of us. I'm confident we'll play better on Thursday and move up the leaderboard."
