Texas A&M?™s Katy Pounds and Jennifer Wilks were selected to the 2006 Academic All-Big 12 Women?™s Basketball Team, the league office announced Wednesday.
Pounds, a sophomore sports management major from Shallowater, Texas, was selected to the first team. Meanwhile, Wilks, a junior entomology major from Frankston, Texas, was selected to the second team.
Nominated by each institution?™s director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the academic all-league women?™s basketball squad consisted of 31 first team members combined with seven on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of her team?™s scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Phillips 66 Big 12 Women?™s Basketball Championship returns to Dallas for the third time in four years (2003-04, 06) on March 7-9 and 11 at Reunion Arena.
The Aggies (21-7, 10-5) are ranked No. 25 nationally and close out the regular season schedule at Oklahoma State (6-20, 0-15) Wednesday at 7 p.m. at Gallagher-Iba Arena in Stillwater, Okla. A&M will post its best Big 12 finish and is vying for a bye position in the postseason championship.
