The No. 12-ranked Texas A&M men's golf team struggled in the opening round of the Morris Williams Intercollegiate on Monday morning but bounced back with the best score of the day in the afternoon round at Austin Country Club.

The Aggies opened with a nine-over-par 297, but came back with a six-under 282 to tie for sixth place with a 579 total. All five A&M players shot par or better in the second round.
No. 2 Oklahoma State leads at 283-283=566, followed by No. 19 Texas Tech (572), Oklahoma (573), Texas (574), No. 7 Brigham Young (575), A&M, Arkansas (579), Stanford (579), No. 23 Southern California, No. 9 Georgia State (585), No. 4 Georgia Tech (586), TCU (589), SMU (598), No. 17 Pepperdine, Fresno State (606), Tulsa (608) and Ohio State (609).
BYU's Oscar Alvarez leads the individual standings with a seven-under 69-68=137 total. SMU's Brandon DeStefano is in second at 65-73=138.
A&M was led by senior Andrew Parr (73-71=144), senior Jerad Harklau (74-70=144) and sophomore Martin Piller (74-70=144), who are tied for 17th. Freshman Bronson Burgoon is tied for 38th (76-71=147) and sophomore Bobby Gates is tied for 56th (78-72=150).
"I was pleased with how we fought back from a tough start with a good second round," A&M coach J.T. Higgins said. "We played with a lot of heart and determination. But we need to be more consistent if we are going to accomplish the goals we have set for ourselves."
