The Texas A&M softball team has earned the No. 4 seed in the 2006 Big 12 Softball Championship, which begins May 10 at Oklahoma City's ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.

"We are looking forward to getting back on the field," commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. "Our team has been working very hard in the past week to increase our intensity on the field and to make plays under pressure. Post-season is an exciting time of year and the Big 12 Conference Championship is a highlight for us. Our team is prepared to make a run at the tournament title and to use that momentum going into the NCAA tournament."
The Aggies (32-15, 11-6 Big 12) will open play in the championship on Thursday, May 11 at 11 a.m. (CDT). A&M will face No. 5-seeded and 20th-ranked Oklahoma.
A win will place the Aggies in a winners' bracket game later Thursday at 5 p.m. (CDT) against No. 8-seed Oklahoma State. The Cowgirls upset top-seeded Texas 2-1 Wednesday night. A loss will put Texas A&M in an elimination game at 2 p.m. (CDT) against the Longhorns.
The Aggies are 13-17 all-time at the Big 12 Championship. Last season, A&M beat Oklahoma State in the opening round of the championship before falling to Baylor on Thursday and Oklahoma on Friday.
A&M is 2-1 against Oklahoma this season, winning 7-6 in the Judi Garman Classic in March before splitting the Big 12 regular season series 0-4, 5-1 in College Station in April.
Since the start of the Big 12 Conference in 1996, the Aggies are 1-3 against OU in championship play. A&M won in 2000 before dropping the next three games in '01, '03 and '05 to the Sooners.

The winner of the Big 12 Championship receives an automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament. The field of 64 will be announced on Sunday, May 14.
