Texas A&M's Josh Carter scored 16 points to lead Athletes in Action to a 70-51 opening-day win against Australia on Saturday at the 28th William Jones Cup at the Taipei Physical Education College Gym.

Carter helped AIA take a quick 7-0 lead, scoring six of the teams first 10 points. Australia came back to tie the game 16-16 at the end of the first period.

Troy DeVries sparked an AIA run late in the first half with two of his game-high six steals as the American team took a seven-point halftime lead.

AIA broke the game open in the third period, outscoring Australia, 26-11 to take a commanding 59-37 lead into the final quarter.

"We came in expecting a good game from Australia," AIA coach Mike Jarvis said. "They are well coached and have good players. They will get better as the tournamnet continues."

DeVries finished with 13 points, six steals and six assists for AIA. Notre Dame's Luke Zeller was the team's top rebounder with eight boards.

AIA continues the round robin portion of the tournament against Korea on Sunday. Korea defeated Kazakhstan 93-58 in its opening round game.
