Texas A&M's Josh Carter sank a three-pointer with six seconds left on Monday to lead Athletes in Action to an 86-83 win against Chinese Taipei (Taiwan) in the 2006 William Jones Cup at the Taipei Physical Education College Gym.
The Americans have a perfect 3-0 record in the tournament.
AIA jumped out to an early 7-0 lead but Chinese Taipei answered with a 15-2 run.The Taiwan national teamtook a 40-36 lead into halftime. Notre Dame's Troy DeVries drained his first four three-point attempts and Kansas' Christian Moodypulled in eight rebounds in the first half to keep the game close.
AIA again took the lead late in the third period when New Mexico's Tony Danridge converted a three-point play to hand the Americans a 53-52 advantage.
The lead reached 13 points (74-61) in the fourth quarter, but Taiwan went on a 14-1 run to tie the game, 75-75, with 3:09 left. Neither team led by more than three points the rest of the way before Carter's game winner.
"I'm really glad I made it," Carter said. "They were tough and I don't know if we could have beat them in overtime."
DeVries had 23 points, making 6-of-10 three-pointers. Carter scored 20 points, Kirkadded 10 and Moody hauled in 11 rebounds.
AIA will play Qatar on Tuesday. Qatar is the only other unbeaten team in the field after defeating Kazakhstan 87-78 on Monday.
