The Downtown Athletic Club of Orlando announced Thursday that Justin Warren has been added to the 2006 Butkus Award Watch List. This is the third major award watch list that Warren has been named to so far this preseason.
Warren, a senior linebacker from Tyler, Texas, was named First Team All-Big 12 last year by the Austin-American Statesman. Last season Warren led the Big 12 with 9.5 tackles per game. In his first three seasons for the Aggies Warren has a team-leading 185 tackles including nine for a loss of 41 yards. For his career, Warren also has three forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries and an interception that he returned for a touchdown.
Widely regarded as one of the most elite individual honors in college football, the Butkus Award is given each year to the best linebacker in college football. The award will be presented to the winner by its namesake, NFL Hall of Famer Dick Butkus.
Earlier in the summer, Warren was named to the Bednarik Award watch list and the Bronko Nagurski award watch list, both of which are awarded each year to the best defensive player in the nation. Warren, along with teammate Red Bryant, was also named to the TSN Preseason All-Big 12 first team.
