"We have had some classic battles with the Huskers over the years. So, I anticipate this being another great game," commented A&M head coach G Guerrieri.
The Aggies improved to 10-3-1 on the season and a perfect 6-0-0 in conference play after collecting a pair of road wins last weekend. The Aggies shutout No. 17 Colorado, 3-0, in Boulder on Friday. Senior Suzzette Devloo was the game's leading scorer netting the first and final goals on the night. Senior Kat Krambeer chipped in her second goal of the season and the second of the match when she scored in the game's 20th minute.
A&M traveled to Lawrence on Sunday where they battled to a 1-0 overtime victory against Kansas. Junior Amy Berend scored the game-winner after combining on a give-and-go move with junior Ashlee Pistorius.
The Huskers enter Friday night's match having registered a pair of 2-1 victories last weekend. Nebraska played host to Baylor on Friday. Senior Brittany Timko evened the score one all at the 80:13 mark to send the game into overtime. Sophomore Aysha Jamani netted the game-winner just 51 seconds into the first overtime period to seal the victory for the Huskers. NU came back Sunday to take on Texas Tech. Timko scored a pair of second half goals as the Huskers came from behind to defeat Tech and improve to 8-3-1 overall and 3-2-1 in league play.
Nebraska holds the all-time advantage, 13-8 over A&M. The two teams met twice in 2005 with both ending in victories for the Aggies. The first match-up came during the regular season A&M hosted the Huskers in College Station. Pistorius got the scoring started in the game's 22nd minute netting the eventual game-winner but it was Krambeer who would come up big for the Aggies. The native of Brooklyn Park, Minnesota posted her first collegiate hat-trick to lead A&M to a 4-0 shutout in front of 2,598 fans at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
The next meeting would take the two teams to San Antonio to battle for a spot in the Big 12 Championship game. A&M struck first when Krambeer found the back of the net at the 27:09 mark. Three second-half goals by Pistorius (2) and junior Melissa Garey would prove to be more than enough as A&M downed Nebraska, 4-2, and advanced to the Big 12 Championship.
Senior forward Suzzette Devloo continues to lead the league in goals scored during conference play with seven goals in just six Big 12 matches; she's also tallied the most points in league play (14). The first of two goals scored against No. 14 Colorado in the 3-0 shutout on Friday served as Devloo's third game-winner in Big 12 play.
Freshman goalkeeper Kristin Arnold earned Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week accolades for the second time this season. Arnold made 12 saves on the weekend, posting her fourth and fifth A&M career shutouts. Arnold recorded five saves in her home state of Colorado on Friday night and seven against Kansas on Sunday.
