For the first time in the history of the program, the Aggies (3-0) will take the higher ranking into a dual meet against Texas (1-1). A&M will be looking to make a dent into the impressive 23-2 series record the Longhorns have compiled against the Aggies since the two first faced off in 1975.
The two teams combined to win 20 of the 21 events at last year's Big 12 Championships that Texas eventually won 942.5-761. A&M did manage to win nine races in the pool including all three freestyle relays, setting a new all-time Big 12 record of 7:09.52 in the 800-yard version.
The Aggies will have the reigning Co-Big 12 Swimmer of the Year, sophomore Codie Hansen (Arlington, Texas), and Big 12 Newcomer of the Year, sophomore Triin Aljand (Tallinn, Estonia), suited up when they face-off against the Longhorns. Sophomore Julia Wilkinson (Stratford, Ont.) captured the Big 12 100-yard backstroke title a year ago and is the top returning 200-yard backstroker in the Big 12 from a year ago as well.
The two teams have faced off once already this season with the Aggies grabbing a 115-87 win at the Big 12 Relays in Lincoln, Neb. A&M won all 16 swimming relays in arguably its strongest-ever performance against the Longhorns.
The Aggies last beat Texas in a dual meet on Nov. 19, 2001, a couple of days after Bonfire fell. A&M out-pointed the then-No. 13 Longhorns, 172-128, after facing an early deficit. A&M's only other win in the series came on Nov. 8, 1995 when the Aggies turned in a huge upset of No. 2 Texas, 177-123. The Longhorns topped the Aggies last year in Austin, 198-94, after A&M could only muster wins in three races.
Admission to the State Farm Lone Star Showdown is free of charge. Live updates and live video streaming will be available for the first time this season as well.
