Christi Hahn had 13 kills and hit .500 for Texas A&M, but it wasn?â„¢t enough as No. 8 Texas defeated the Aggies, 30-22, 30-16, 30-18, in front of 2,882 at the State Farm Lone Star Showdown at Gregory Gym.
Texas, which picked up its fifth consecutive victory against the Aggies, improves to 18-5 overall and 13-3 in the Big 12 Conference. A&M falls to 11-13 and 4-12.
The Longhorns hit .346, the highest by an A&M opponent this season, while holding the Aggies to a .095 hitting percentage. Texas, which had 49 kills to A&M?â„¢s 35, also outblocked the Aggies, 8-3.
A&M held a 13-11 lead in the opening game before the Longhorns rallied for five unanswered points to take their fourth lead of the game. A&M was within 21-19 when Texas went on a 6-1 run to begin pulling away. Texas was serving for the game at 29-21, but Hahn kept the Aggies alive with her seventh kill of the game. Texas then ended the game with a kill by setter Michelle Moriarty.
Game 2 was tied at 6-6 before the Longhorns went on an18-4 run to take a commanding lead. A&M, which was held to a -.053 hitting percentage in the frame, went on a 5-1 run to get within 25-15 before Texas closed out the game on a 5-1 spurt.
Texas never trailed in the third game. A&M stayed close at 15-12 before the Longhorns scored seven consecutive points. Kelly Stanton ended the run with a kill, but Texas answered with three more points to take a 25-13 lead. A&M ran off three straight points but could not get any closer than nine points before Texas ended the game and the match.
Ashley Engle led the Longhorns with 13 kills, and Destinee Hooker added 12 while hitting at a .632 clip.
A&M?â„¢s Zanny Castillo led all players with 16 digs, the most by an Aggie in a three-game match this season. Alyson Jennings led Texas with 13 digs.
A&M returns home Sunday to host the Iowa State Cyclones. First serve is at 2 p.m. at G. Rollie White Coliseum. In addition, Aggie players and coaches will host a free youth clinic following the match.
