The 6th-ranked Texas A&M softball team fell to the 12th-ranked Beavers of Oregon State (2-0) Sunday in the final day of games at the Kajikawa Classic held at the Tempe Sports Complex.
?We struggled offensively,? commented A&M head coach Jo Evans. ?We need to work on being more aggressive at the plate and find our way in terms of confidence and poise. We?™re still a little too passive, we need to learn how to take charge and play our game. I am confident, though, that we?™ll regroup and find the leadership we need to be successful.?
It was the Beavers (3-2-0) that struck first and held on to the lead for the win. Paige Lowe scored a run in the bottom of the first off a double by Adrienne Alo that lined just over the head of Aggie leftfielder, Ronda Smith.
In the bottom of the third, Alo recorded her second RBI of the game, this time on a single that landed in shallow centerfield. Scoring for Oregon State was leftfielder Cambria Miranda who reached base on a walk.
The defending Big 12 Champion, Aggies (3-2-0), managed four hits off Beaver starting pitcher, Brianne McGown. McGown did not allow a walk while striking out nine A&M batters, including five consecutive from the first to the second innings.
With the loss, Scarborough dropped to 1-2 on the season, giving up four hits and two earned runs; walking two OSU batters and striking out five.
?I was happy with the way Scarborough settled in,? Evans concluded. ?She struggled a little early on, but then she got into a groove and threw the right pitches to get people out. She built up her confidence as the game went on.?
Freshman, catcher Patti Wunderlich was named State Farm Player of the Game, going 1-for-2 and catching a solid game behind the plate for A&M.
The Aggies return home for a doubleheader against the University of Texas- San Antonio on Wed. Feb. 15 at the Aggie Softball Complex. You can access live audio and stats for the match-up against UTSA by logging on to AggieAthletics.com.
