Jose Salazar went 4-for-5 with two doubles and three runs on Tuesday night scored to lead the Texas A&M baseball team to a 7-4 victory over Sam Houston in front of a sold out crowd of 1,253 fans at the brand new Bearkat Stadium.
Salazar, a senior transfer from Sam Houston, became the first A&M player to collect a 4-hit game this season.
?It was good to go on the road and get off to a good start,? said first-year head coach Rob Childress. ?I thought we kind of shut things down a little bit in the middle of the game but their pitchers had a little bit to do with that. But the bottom line is that it is good to get a win on the road.?
With the win, the Aggies improved to 4-0, while the Bearkats dropped their first game of the season and moved to 3-1.
The Aggies struck first in the top of the first with an unearned run off Bearkats?™ starter Matt Heinrich. Salazar singled and moved to third on consecutive balks by Heinrich. Salazar then scored when Spencer Jackson reached on a throwing error by Sam Houston shortstop Gregory O?™Neill.
The Aggies chased Heinrich in the third by scoring four runs and making the score 5-0. Parker Dalton singled and moved to third on a Salazar double. Austin Boggs then lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Dalton and Jackson followed with a two-run homer over the wall in left center. Adam Hale then doubled with two outs and scored on an RBI single by John Infante.
A&M added two more runs in the fourth. Dalton singled and stole second to start the inning and scored on a one-out double by Salazar. Salazar later scored on a single by Jackson.
Chance Corgan (1-0) pitched five scoreless innings to earn the win. He allowed just three hits, struck out six and walked three.
Jason Meyer replaced Corgan in the sixth and the second batter he faced, Karl Krailo belted a solo homer over the wall in left to make the score 7-1.
Meyer issued a three-run shot over the center field fence to SHSU right fielder Dustin Martin in the bottom of the eighth inning. With the Aggie lead at 7-4, Hart Hering entered in relief and retired the final four batters for the save. It was his first save of the season.
Heinrich (1-0) was tagged with loss, allowing five runs ?- four earned ?- on seven hits.
Texas A&M returns home this weekend where they host a three-game series against Northern Colorado. First pitch in Friday?™s opener will be at 3 p.m. at Olsen Field.
