Texas A&M scored 11 runs in the first four innings on Tuesday night to propel the Aggies to a 14-3 win over Texas-Arlington at Clay Gould Ballpark.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 8-0 while the Mavericks dropped to 3-4.
A&M was led offensively by Parker Dalton and Austin Boggs who had two hits each. Dalton also drove in three runs.
?We scored early and Chance Corgan kept throwing zeros up on the scoreboard,? said A&M head coach Rob Childress. ?So many times this year we have gotten out to an early lead and have not finished the game. Tonight we kept the pressure on the entire game and kept building on the lead.?
Corgan (2-0) allowed only two runs in his five-complete innings of work to earn the win. He struck out eight and walked four.
Texas A&M used three hits and a costly UTA error to score five runs in the top of he second. Boggs and Spencer Jackson singled before Adam Hale was hit by a pitch from UTA starter Chris Taylor to load the bases. Josh Stinson then drew a walk to force Boggs home and Brandon Glover lifted a sacrifice fly to left to plate Jackson. Dalton laced a single to left that went between the legs of left fielder David Mcloed, allowing all three runners to score.
The Aggies added three more runs in the top of the third. With one out, Boggs doubled, Jackson was hit by a pitch and Hale walked to load the bases. Stinson grounded out to second, allowing Boggs to score before Dalton drove in his second and third runs of the game with a single up the middle to make the score 8-0.
With two outs and nobody on, the Aggies rallied for three more runs in the fourth. Boggs and Jackson walked and Hale followed with a ringing double to right center to score them both. Stinson then followed with a double to chase Hale across and run the A&M lead to 11-0.
The Aggies?™ 26-inning scoreless streak by the pitching staff came to an end in the bottom of the fifth. A&M starter Chance Corgan allowed a pair of walks to James Smith and Adam Moore before pinch hitter Ben Burum laced a triple down the line in right to cut the A&M lead to 11-2.
Jason Meyer, Evan Gerald, Scooter Hicks and Jordan Chambless each pitched a scoreless inning in relief for A&M.
A sacrifice fly by Keith Stein and an RBI single by Ryan Hill in the top of the eighth and a RBI triple by Jess Buenger in the ninth stretch the A&M lead to 14-2.
Taylor (0-1) suffered the loss as he lasted just three innings and allowed eight runs ?- six earned ?- on five hits. He struck out two, walked four and hit two batters.
The Aggies return to action this weekend as they host the 2006 Domino?™s Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic from Friday through Monday.
