Texas A&M managed only three hits in third-day action of the Domino?™s Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic on Sunday night as Missouri State handed the Aggies their first loss of the season, 3-2, before 4,004 fans at Olsen Field.
The Aggies dropped to 10-1 over all and to 2-1 in the Classic, while Missouri State improved to 2-1 in both categories.
With a win in tomorrow?™s noon game against Utah, the Bears will wrap up the tournament championship. The Aggies need a MSU loss and a win against UNC Greensboro to claim the tournament title.
?You have to give Missouri State?™s pitchers some credit,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?We had a good 10-0 run to start the season and we need to come out tomorrow and start a new streak.?
The Aggies scored first in the bottom of the fourth with two runs off Bears?™ starter Scott Carroll. Blake Stouffer beat out an infield single and moved to second when Jose Salazar was hit by a pitch. Austin Boggs successfully executed a sacrifice bunt to move the runners up a station before Stouffer scored when Spencer Jackson reached on a fielding error. Salazar later scored on a balk by Carroll, making the score 2-0.
Missouri State cut the A&M lead in half in the top of the fifth with an unearned run off A&M starting pitcher Austin Creps. Tanner Mattson singled to start the inning, trotted to second on a passed ball and moved to third on a groundout. Chris Taylor drove Matteson in with an RBI single.
The Bears scored twice in the top of the sixth to take the lead, 3-2. Matt Weglarz doubled and Tim Rafferty walked to lead off the inning. Jason Meyer replaced Creps and Tony Lewis singled to plate Weglarz and Rafferty scored on a groundout.
Creps (1-1) lasted five-plus innings, allowing three runs ?- two earned ?- on seven hits. He fanned two and walked one.
Carroll (1-0) pitched six-complete innings, allowing two earned runs on three hits. He struck out five and walked two.
Chris Mackey, did not allow a hit over the final three innings to earn his first save of the year.
Utah fought back with two runs to tie the game in the top of the ninth in the first game of the day, only to allow a run in the bottom of the inning as UNC Greensboro defeated the Utes, 6-5.
The tournament concludes on Sunday with a pair of games. Missouri State and Utah play at noon and UNC Greensboro faces Texas A&M at 7 p.m.
