Matt Ueckert earned his second relief win of the Domino's Pizza Aggie Baseball Classic on Monday night to lead No. 29 Texas A&M to a 5-3 win over UNC Greensboro at Olsen Field.
With the win, the Aggies improved to 11-1 overall and earned the tourney title with a 3-1 record.
Ueckert (3-0) tossed 2 1/3 innings, allowing one hit and striking out one. Ueckert was named the tournament's most valuable player after posting two wins and striking out six in five innings of work. He did not walk a man and allowed only two hits in that span.
Jordan Chambless earned his second save of the season and the tournament by recording the last out of the game via strikeout. He also earned all-tournament recognition.
Other A&M members of the all-tournament team included outfielder Blake Stouffer and infielder Jose Salazar.
A&M took the lead in the top of the first with three straight singles off UNCG starter Ryan Clear. Stouffer singled to right and moved to third on another single to right by Jose Salazar. Spencer Jackson then singled to left to plate Stouffer and make the score 1-0.
After a two-out triple in the second, Parker Dalton sprinted for home as Clear pitched out of the full windup. Dalton safely slid in past the tag of catcher Adam Deleo for a straight steal of home to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
The Spartans chased A&M starter Chance Corgan in the fourth. Jermaine Mitchell walked and Guy Welsh singled. Greg Matson delivered an RBI single and two straight groundouts plated Welsh and moved Matson to third. Corgan then unleashed a wild pitch allowing Matson to trot home. After another walk and a single, Ueckert replaced Corgan, who lasted 3 2/3 innings.
A&M regained the lead in the top of the fifth with a pair of sacrifice flies by Salazar and Jake Vasquez.
Salazar delivered again with an RBI single in the top of the ninth to give the Aggies a two-run lead, 5-3.
Evan Gerald, Anthony Vasquez and Hart Hering bridged the gap between Ueckert and Chambless with 2 2/3 innings of scoreless relief.
The Aggies return to action this weekend when they travel to Gainesville, Fla. for a three-game series with No. 5 Florida.
