Josh Stinson had two of the three Texas A&M hits on Saturday as No. 5 Florida defeated the 29th-ranked Aggies, 4-1, in front of 3,781 fans at McKethan Stadium.
With the loss, the Aggies dropped to 12-2 while the Gators improved to 9-5. The deciding contest of the three-game series will be played on Sunday at 1 p.m. (EST) and noon (CST).
Florida starter Brian Augenstine (4-0) whirled a complete-game, three-hitter. He struck out eight, did not walk a man and retired the first 16 men he faced.
For the first time this season, the A&M opponent scored the game?™s initial run. The leadoff man in the bottom of the second, Brian Leclerc deposited a pitch from A&M starter Kyle Thebeau over the wall in left to give the Gators a 1-0 lead.
Florida stretched its lead to 2-0 with an unearned run in the bottom of the fifth. Chris Woods reached on an infield single and advanced to second on an overthrow by third baseman Austin Boggs. In an effort to chase down the overthrow, second baseman Jose Salazar misplayed the ball, allowing Woods to reach third. A grounder by Avery Barnes allowed Woods to score.
Stinson?™s first homer of the year, a solo shot in the sixth, accounted for the only Aggie run of the game. Stinson also doubled in the eighth.
Thebeau (1-1) shouldered the loss, allowing two runs ?- one earned - on only two hit. He struck out two and walked three in seven-complete innings.
Florida added two insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth on a two-RBI single by Austin Pride.
