Freshman defender Nicole Ketchum scored two goals on the day to pace the 12th-ranked Texas A&M soccer team to a 4-2 road victory over the Texas Tech Red Raiders in front of 626 fans at R.P. Fuller Stadium in Lubbock.
A&M outplayed Tech in every facet of the match, controlling possession of the ball for the majority of the game and significantly outshooting the Red Raiders on the afternoon. The Aggies took nine corners to TTU?™s three.
?Tech played terrific today,? said A&M coach G Guerrieri. ?They really worked hard and made us earn everything we got today. To go on the road and be able to get up to a 4-0 lead is very difficult and I?™m proud of the way our athletes played today.?
The Aggies?™ first goal of the match came in the 28th minute, as Ashlee Pistorius brought down a pass from and turned to face the Red Raider defense. She then slipped a neat little pass in behind the Tech back line and into the path of a streaking Suzzette Devloo who dribbled past Tech goalkeeper, Colleen Pitts, and netting her third goal of the season.
A&M went into the half with a comfortable 1-0 lead.
In the 55th minute, Allison Martino took one of the Aggies?™ nine corner kicks of the day and found freshman defender Nicole Ketchum near the top of the Raider?™s six yard box, where she buried a header into the net, for a 2-0 Aggie lead.
Three minutes later, the Aggies completed eight passes inside the Tech half of the field before junior midfielder Paige Carmichael guided a short square pass into Ketchum?™s path in the middle of the field where she fired a shot from 25 yards out that just sailed over Pitts?™ finger tips and right under the crossbar for the game-winner and the Aggies?™ third goal of the match. With the game-winner Ketchum was named State Farm Player of the Game.
With 17:44 left on the clock, junior forward Melissa Garey dished out an assist to junior transfer Elisabeth Jones down on the close right wing who dribbled in and sent a hard shot to the back right of the net.
Shannon Sims netted the Red Raiders first of two goals of the day off a free kick from Brittany Hamilton in the game's 86th minute. Brittany Harrison added the second goal with just over six minutes left in the match.
The Aggies have extended their undefeated streak, in Big 12 play, to 11 games, dating back to October of 2005. With the victory, the Aggies improve to 6-3-1, 2-0-0 in Big 12 play, while the loss drops the Red Raiders to 4-6-0, 0-2-2 in the league.
A&M returns to the friendly confines of the Aggie Soccer Stadium for a mid-week game against the Oklahoma State Cowgirls. The match will be televised on a tape delay basis by FOX Soccer Channel. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.
