"We are ready to get on the field against someone wearing a different uniform," second-year head coach Rob Childress said. "The players are ready and have worked extremely hard to prepare for the season."
Senior left-hander Jason Meyer will start on the mound, but fans can expect to see several pitchers take the mound in the opener.
"I want to get a lot of guys out there to get their feet wet," Childress said. "We will need a bunch of guys to contribute on the mound this year for us to be successful. We want many pitchers to see action early in the season to see who will respond in game situations."
The Aggies return 14 lettermen from last year, including five starters in the field and six pitchers.
The 11th-ranked signing class in the country, which includes 26 newcomers, will look to contribute immediately.
"We have a lot of potential," Childress said. "We have a bunch of athletic players that play the game the way it is supposed to be played. We have some holes to fill, but feel we have the personnel to do it."
The Aggies are 12-0 all-time against the Tigers, including an 8-0 win in their last meeting in 2005.
Since 1951, Texas A&M is 43-13 on opening day and the Aggies have won their last six home openers. The last loss in a home opener was to Texas-San Antonio in 2000.
After the Texas Southern game, A&M will travel to Minute Maid Park in Houston for games against Arizona State, No. 1 Rice and Houston, before returning to Olsen Field for a 19-game homestand.
All Texas A&M games will be broadcast live on AM-1620 WTAW. Airtime is 3:45 p.m. Fans can also follow the action via live scoring updates and free live video streaming at AggieAthletics.com.
