Texas A&M?â„¢s Israel Duran and Eric Sehn swept the Big 12 men?â„¢s swimming and diving weekly awards after strong efforts against SMU and Texas, the conference office announced Wednesday.
For Sehn, a junior from Edmonton, Alberta, Canada, it was his fifth Big 12 Diver of the Week honor in 2006-07 and the eighth award of his career. With dominating consistency, Sehn won five of six possible awards this year. With eight career awards to his credit, Sehn matched the Big 12 record for career weekly honors that was originally set by Troy Dumais of Texas from 1998-2002.
Sehn won the weekly honor after improving to a perfect 15-0 against collegians this season with four victories in dual meets against Southern Methodist and Texas.
Against the No. 25 Mustangs, Sehn set the school record with a 405.15 effort on the one-meter springboard and then grabbed gold on the three-meter with a score of 363.54. Against the top-ranked Longhorns in the State Farm Lone Star Showdown, Sehn posted head-to-head victories over Texas?â„¢ Mike Wong with scores of 347.92 on the one-meter and 383.70 on the three-meter.
It was Duran?â„¢s second Big 12 Swimmer of the Week honor of the season. Duran, a freshman from Tijuana, Mexico, swam to victory in the 200-yard butterfly against SMU in an NCAA ?B? cut time of 1:47.49 and took third in the 200 I.M. in 1:50.81. Against the Longhorns, Duran contributed a career-best 49.70 clocking in a third-place finish in the 100 backstroke.
Duran and Sehn and the rest of the Aggie swimming and diving team will return to action when Texas A&M hosts the 2007 Big 12 Championships Feb. 14-17 at the TAMU Student Recreation Natatorium.
