DALTON NOMINATED FOR WOODEN CUP AWARD
Texas A&M senior baseball player Parker Dalton was named as one of the six nominees for the Third Annual Coach Wooden Citizenship Cup. Dalton was named the 2006 Big 12 Male Sportsperson of the Year and earned the NCAA Division I Sportsmanship Award for his efforts in welcoming six Tulane athletic teams to the A&M campus following Hurricane Katrina. The Wooden Cup is given to a collegiate and a professional athlete who have made the greatest difference in the lives of others. The Wooden Cup is named in honor of John Wooden, one of the most successful coaches in collegiate basketball history. Wooden's legacy as a compassionate, civic-minded individual continues to make him one of the most admired coaches in the history of collegiate sports.
BROOKS WALLACE AWARD WATCH LIST
Texas A&M junior outfielder Blake Stouffer was named to the watch list for the 2007 Brooks Wallace Award. The College Baseball Foundation presents the award annually to the national college baseball player of the year. The list will be trimmed to 12 semifinalists in late May and to three finalists following the NCAA Super Regionals. Last season, Stouffer led the Aggies with 17 stolen bases in 24 attempts. He hit .259 with three home runs and 15 RBI. This past summer, Stouffer hit .292 with 23 stolen bases for Athletes in Action in the Alaskan Collegiate League.
SIGNING CLASS RANKED No. 11
Texas A&M's 2006 baseball signing class was ranked No. 11 in the nation by Collegiate Baseball Newspaper. The Aggies have 27 newcomers on this year's roster. "The ranking is a testament to the hard work of our staff, particularly assistant coaches Matt Deggs and Jeremy Talbot, volunteer assistant Will Bolt and director of baseball operations Jason Hutchins," A&M head coach Rob Childress said. "Our staff worked really hard to put together a versatile class that will make us a much better team this coming year. The class is a solid mix of athletic players with speed, power and baseball instincts. We were looking for blue-collar, hard-nosed baseball players and we have a bunch of new guys who fill that role and are athletic."
SEASON OPENERS
With the Aggies' 9-1 win over Texas Southern in this year's opener, A&M improved to 44-13 in season openers since 1951. The Aggies have won their last eight home openers.
