Texas A&M junior softball players Megan Gibson and Amanda Scarborough were named the Big 12 Conference Player and Pitcher of the Week, the league office announced today.
Gibson earned Big 12 Player of the Week accolades after a stellar performance at the plate in five games played at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz. Gibson went 8-for-11 (.727), with two home runs, including the walk-off, against All-WCWS Team pitcher, Taryne Mowatt, to beat No. 1 Arizona, 3-2. Gibson scored six runs while driving in four RBI on the weekend against No. 4 Northwestern, No. 21 Fresno State, No. 3 UCLA, Utah and No. 1 Arizona. She drew eight walks, two intentional. Gibson posted a 1.273 slugging percentage, after facing All-American pitchers in Anjelica Selden and Eileen Canney, not to mention Robin Mackin, a member of the Canadian National Team.
In addition to her incredible batting skills, Gibson earned wins, in the circle, over No. 21 Fresno State and Utah. She worked 12 innings allowing three earned runs for a 1.75 ERA and struck out 16 opposing batters.
Scarborough, who was recently named USA Softball National Player of the Week, brings home her third Big 12 Pitcher of the Week honor in just over two years at A&M. She opened the 2007 season with three wins on the mound, all against top-five opponents in No. 1 Arizona (3-2), No. 3 UCLA (5-4) and No. 4 Northwestern (4-3). She only allowed three earned runs off 14 hits in 21 innings of work. She fanned 15 batters, posting a 1.00 ERA. Against Northwestern, after starting the game with a walk, retired 11 consecutive batters. At the plate Scarborough was 5-for-17 with five runs scored and four runs driven in.
The 3rd-ranked Aggies return to action on Friday in the first round of the 2007 Aggie Classic held at the Aggie Softball Complex. A&M is slated to play Arkansas at 2:30 p.m. followed by a game against Rutgers at 4:45 p.m.
