No. 28 Texas A&M scored all of its runs with two outs as the Aggies defeated Texas-Pan American, 5-2, on a windy Saturday afternoon at Olsen Field.
?I felt like it was a good game for us today,? A&M head coach Rob Childress said. ?We had some guys step up and get huge two-out hits. I thought we competed well today on a tough day to hit with the wind blowing in the way it was.?
With the win, A&M improved to 6-1 while UTPA dropped to 4-6. The Aggies will try for the series sweep Sunday afternoon. First pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Olsen Field.
Darby Brown belted a two-out, two-RBI double to left in the bottom of the first to give the Aggies a 2-0 lead.
A&M starter Kyle Thebeau held the Broncs hitless for the first five innings, but UTPA tied the game in the top of the sixth. Three straight singles by Roly Gonzalez, Osiel Flores and Abraham Garcia pushed one run across. Patrick Brooks executed a sacrifice bunt to move both runners into scoring position, before Zach Smith grounded out to score Flores and tie the game at two.
Pan American starter Josh Wymer settled in after allowing two in the first and retired 15 in a row from the second through the sixth innings.
A&M got back on track offensively in the seventh, scoring three runs and regaining the lead, 5-2. Brown singled to start the inning and after two quick outs, Josh Stinson walked. Dane Carter delivered a two-RBI double down the third base line. After Ben Feltner reached on a bunt single, Blake Stouffer singled to plate Parker Dalton, who was pinch running for Carter.
Kiel Renfro (1-0) pitched a scoreless seventh to earn the win.
Wymer (2-2) suffered the loss, allowing five runs on six hits in seven-complete innings.
Kirkland Rivers, who started the game in right field and moved to first base to start the eighth, replaced Renfro after a lead walk in the eighth. Rivers retired all six men he faced to earn his first save of the year.
