Freshman forward Cydne Currie scored two goals to pace the Texas A&M soccer team to a 2-0 shutout win over the LSU Tigers Saturday night at the Aggie Soccer Stadium.
The Aggies controlled nearly all the play on the evening, outshooting the Tigers 17-2 for the game as A&M remained undefeated in their non-traditional spring season.
Texas A&M, the defending Big 12 soccer champions, took control of the match from the opening kickoff and found the back of the net in the game's 12th minute when five different Aggies combined to spring Allison Martino down the Aggie left flank. Martino beat a Tiger defender and drove a low cross into the path of a streaking Currie, who redirected the ball through the Tiger goalkeeper's legs and into the goal.
"That was a nice goal," commented Aggie coach G Guerrieri. ?The ball started with Kelly Wilmoth at left back, and was passed briskly through our midfield and front line before 'A-Mart' found Cydne in front of goal. We had some glimpses of really attractive play throughout the game, but that was a real gem."
A few minutes later, A&M forward Melissa Garey received a pass approximately 35 yards from goal and recognized that the LSU keeper was too far off her goal line. Garey turned and chipped a shot which struck the crossbar of the goal. Currie hustled to get on the end of the rebound, but her shot was bravely blocked by the keeper.
The Aggies were awarded a corner kick, one of five on the evening, with just over two minutes remaining in the first half. Junior midfielder Elizabeth Jones drove a right footed in-swinger into the mouth of the LSU goal which Currie redirected past three Tiger defenders to make the score a comfortable 2-0 at the half.
Texas A&M goalkeeper Kristin Arnold was only forced to make 1 save on the evening to preserve the shutout win for the Aggies.
The Aggies are allowed five spring exhibition dates. They won their own 7-v-7 tournament earlier in the month. A&M?â„¢s next match will be on Thursday, March 22 at the Aggie Soccer Stadium against Brigham Young University.
